Maison Margiela: The paradigm of understated cool
The paradigm of understated cool
Founded in Paris in 1988, Maison Margiela is a fashion house that has historically taken a distinct and rebellious approach to the fashion world. Designer Martin Margiela is notorious for his anonymity - never showing his face, rarely agreeing to interviews and most shockingly, by resigning as creative director of the house in 2009 at the height of his success and the brand's growing global recognition.
He is an invisible icon in the industry, who masterfully wove the thread of invisibility into his designs. Margiela labels are sewn in using 4 white stitches, which are visible on the outside of the garment. They act as a type of membership to a private club of insiders who share an appreciation for understated, quietly rebellious and even deconstructed beauty.
Tonal layering and slightly oversized cuts turns classic pieces like oxfords and cords into more relaxed, everyday pieces, especially when paired back to a Maison Margiela Replica sneaker.
This season, creative director John Galliano brings the Maison Margiela logo to the forefront by quietly integrating it into leather patches and by irreverently inverting Maison to create a double MM effect.
