You two are radiant. How did you meet?
We met at UT through mutual friends. We saw each other again a few months later at Cheer Up Charlies when we were both single and instantly clicked. After hanging out more frequently we knew we had something good and one thing led to the other…
What are your favorite romantic spots in town?
Blue Daliah (back patio!) for coffee and bagels. Justine’s for a late-night bite and cocktails. For a romantic dinner we love going to Jeffrey’s or cooking a fresh meal together at home.
You both have great style — how do your styles differ?
Leila has a very clean and mature look and tends to wear neutrals with a few pops of color. Kim’s closet is vintage inspired with a modern twist. Kim bounces between expressing masculine and feminine sensibilities.
What are your Valentine’s Day plans?
Board games, walk our dog around the lake, grab some dessert, and cook a 5 course dinner at home from scratch.
Tell me your favorite qualities in one another:
Kim: My favorite qualities of Leila’s are innumerable, but I’ll pick a few: she is an amazing visual organizer and her spatial coordination for objects and colors are impeccable. She has an amazing memory. We can’t go anywhere without bumping into someone Leila knows. And of course, she is an amazing friend and life partner.
Leila: Kim is dazzling beyond compare with a heart larger than most. Everyone she meets can’t help but be charmed by her. She fights for what’s right for her friends, family, and community. Kim also has an impressive knack for explaining just about any legal concept in a way that’s easy to understand and knows Latin American history like the back of her hand. And her smile lights up a room.
What words or phrases do you overuse?
An exaggerated “Oh Lord” every time something happens that annoys or shakes us. We’ve been binging Marvelous Mrs. Maisel so “Put that on your plate!” comes up a lot.
Where and when were you happiest?
We rented an adobe house in the mountains of Boulder, Colorado and felt like we were on top of the world. Nobody could bother us. No one needed us. It was just her and me.
If you were to die and come back as a person or thing, what would it be?
Kim: I would come back as a migrating bird.
Leila: Sentient and thriving garden.
Which historical figures do you most identify with?
Kim: Marielle Franco is someone I resonate with.
Leila: Tough one. I really admire Wangari Maathai.
