Fortunately, life in Central Texas is far from harsh during the winter months. Rarely dropping below freezing, the mere thought of snow is enough to cause a serious traffic jam. And, while Texans can write an encyclopedia on ways to beat the heat, we are left to citizens of colder climates to enlighten us on the necessities needed to withstand the winter months, none more qualified than residents of the island, Inis Meáin (pronounced Inish Maaahn).
Inis Meáin is one of the Aran Islands off the west coast of Ireland. Only 3 miles wide, the island is located 3o miles out to sea and has a population of approximately 200 people. With fishing and agriculture making up the primary modes of commerce on the island, it comes as no surprise that this island is known for some of the world’s finest fisherman attire.
As the knowledge of their world renown knits have grown, so has their quality. Inis Meáin uses the finest yarns, shipped from all over the world. However, the wool is sourced from sheep raised on the island, and each sweater is hand knit by residents of the small community. Each collection takes inspiration from something deeply personal to the inhabitants of the island. From the stone fences that were built 2500 years ago, to the traditional fishing boat used on the island, the tiny island gives rise to creative collections each season.
We are pleased to be carrying Inis Meáin at By George. We love the story, the quality, and the look of these wonderful winter garments. As the temperature drops this December, come see what knits we are carrying from this iconic islander brand. Don’t take it from us … take it from a fisherman.
